That is pair programming, just not the classic one-human-one-IDE version. It’s multi-model collaboration, review before commit, escalation on ambiguity, and controlled human-in-the-loop intervention. If that’s your target, the question isn’t “which framework is best?” It’s:

Start with the goal: what kind of AI pair programmer are you building?

A lot of bad comparisons happen because people bundle totally different products into one category.

That “AI engineering stack” framing is useful because it prevents category errors. LlamaIndex is not primarily trying to be Zapier for engineering workflows. n8n is not trying to be the deepest retrieval framework for your monorepo. Flowise is not trying to out-code a custom framework when you need bespoke control over every retrieval and evaluation decision.

The smartest choice for pair programming depends on what creates value in your product:

That’s the right mental model. n8n is often not the “brain” or the deepest RAG layer. It is the orchestrator around the brain. Its AI guidance and docs increasingly support agent patterns, but its enduring advantage is that it already knows how to connect systems, handle control flow, and operationalize workflows.[1][7]

The “n8n-as-code” idea is worth watching because it blurs the old line between no-code automation and developer-native workflow generation. For AI pair programming, that opens an interesting loop: coding agents that can propose or build the engineering automation around their own work. That’s not mainstream yet, but it points toward a future where the pair programmer does not just write code — it also assembles the surrounding workflow.

Where n8n is weaker is also obvious: it is not the best place to invent sophisticated retrieval strategies or build the most nuanced coding-agent cognition. If your main challenge is “how do I get highly relevant context out of a sprawling codebase and knowledge graph,” n8n is not your lead tool. But if your challenge is “how do I make this assistant interact safely with GitHub, Jira, Slack, CI, and approval chains,” n8n is the strongest choice here.[15]

Making AI workflows reliable in n8n is not as easy as it seems.

When your workflow works, it's tempting to call it a day. But edge cases appear through repetition.

For the output to always conform to the same format, I had to write a JS validation script and then handle error cases with another (cheaper) LLM.

The JS script is the right tool for JSON validation. It would be expensive and error-prone to give that task to an LLM.

You could skip this step, but it would mean passing even successful cases to the fixer LLM, which would increase costs for nothing.

Overall, this approach allows me to:
- Save money by using a lower-end main model
- Improve reliability from 20% to more than 90%
- Reduce latency by keeping success cases to a single LLM call

I think I could improve this workflow even further by implementing retries, and other strategies. It's fine for a sample project though.
